Pelican Harbor Base is located in the sunny South,
Miami, Florida. Our base is named after Pelican Harbor, located in North
Bay Village, Florida, off of the 79th Street Causeway. It contains an
artwork/memorial named "The Fin Project" and dedicated to Cold War
Submariners. It consists of 22 sail planes from decommissioned nuclear
boats mounted vertically and
resembles a school of "steel sharks."
We are a U.S. Submarine Veterans
(USSVI) base an form a part of USSVI Eastern District Six.
Founded in 2002, our base presently has 36
qualified members. Our members include WWII submariners like Bill Taylor, who made 11 war
patrols, including the fourth patrol of the USS Growler (SS-215). Other members served during Korean
Conflict, Viet Nam, the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and several
of us made deterrent patrols aboard Polaris the Triton
boats.
Our purpose is to meet as shipmates to serve our
community, share good times, and swap "sea stories", but NEVER to forget
those submariners who went before us and paid the ultimate
price serving God and Country.
"Sailors, rest your oars."
